May and Sam Henderson

May and Sam Henderson

Sam was the son of Kenneth Henderson, a Scottish engineer who came to Canada in 1880 and married Lucy Johnson, a high ranking Nakwaktok woman. Although the family had a homestead on Denman Island, the children spent much of their childhood with their mother’s relatives, living in Kwakwaka’wakw communities around Blunden Harbour and Alert Bay. As a young man Sam visited Campbell River where May, the daughter of Chief John Quocksister, caught his eye. They married in 1934 and settled in Campbell River. Together they raised 16 children.
